PMB Expresses Delight Over NUC, TETFund, Industry Partnership

Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed delight at the partnership between the National Universities Commission (NUC), TETFund and the Industry towards making Research count for National development.

President Buhari made this known during the 31st and 32nd Combined Convocation Ceremonies of the University of Jos held recently.

The President who was represented by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro expressed pleasure at learning about the working relationship between NUC and TETFund on the Triple Helix Concept and the Institutionalization of Research and Development (R & D), wherein the Academic and Research community are actively in partnership with the Industry.

He urged academics to rise to the new initiatives in order to change the narrative and make Nigerian universities more competitive at the global stage.
“At a time I have just inaugurated a new Economic Advisory Council, Nigeria looks up to the Academic community to use research and make their contributions to our drive for a veritable Knowledge Economy which is the trend in the 21st Century.

“As a government, we are committed to giving education its pride of place. As it stands, education remains the potent weapon in our hands that can be used to change the narrative of unemployment, corruption and other forms of vices in our nation.

“Therefore, we place a high premium on education, by creating a wider access to higher education opportunities in the country; through improved funding and creating a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.

“It is for this reason that we are expanding the funding source for infrastructure in our tertiary institutions, Precisely why the Federal Ministry of Works has moved into University campuses to construct roads, just as PTDF, CBN, NCC and NITDA have been providing key facilities as well as Professorial chairs in our Universities,” he said.

President Buhari congratulated the university for its strong research credentials which had seen it win the World Bank funded African Centre of Excellence (ACE) and two grants from TETFund’s National Research Fund (NRF) Intervention.

He also congratulated the graduating students and urged them to apply skills and knowledge acquired during their studies to innovations that will contribute to the economic development of the country.

One of the highlights of the Convocation Ceremonies was the commissioning of TETFund-sponsored projects and foundation laying for new structures at the university by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro.
